Salvadora: Argentina’s Anarchist Savior

SALVADORA AFICHE 2DA VSalvadora Medina Onrubia led a life of contradictions. As a woman in the early 20th century, she committed every imaginable sin: she became a single mother, she was an anarchist, journalist and began her career as a writer when she was barely 15 years old.   She gave fiery speeches at violent worker protests and led jail breaks for fallen comrades.

But she lived a life of luxury with her husband, who was the owner of the largest newspaper in Argentina. She used this relationship to spread her ideals with her writing, becoming one of the most famous writers of her era. This documentary focuses on her life as a revolutionary at a time when 30% of the workers in Argentina identified as anarchists.

The film also shows the great personal price that she paid: her children despised her because of her eccentric ways and political ideology. Her family life was rife with tragedy and death. Through her journals, poems and personal documents, this documentary dives into the life of an anarchist woman who didn’t know how to fit into her time’s stereotypes.

Salvadora is from award winning director Daiana Rosenfeld, winner of the Martin Fierro Award for best documentary film! The movie was premiered in April 2017 at the Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival (BAFICI) and had a successful theatrical run in Argentina.
